The newly recognized community of Sherwood Forest is located in the Southern portion of Northridge.  The neighborhood received a new proclamation of its independence in 2013 with word that the U.S. Postal Service has begun recognition of the area as a valid mailing address.

“The large tree-lined tract homes in this newly named community gives it the distinction that it has been recognized by the City of Los Angeles and the federal government,” Sherman said.  Councilman Mitch Englander, a supporter of officially recognizing the district by the City Council, said the ZIP code designation will add a sense of genuine community. Englander, in August 2012, won council approval of a petition from the Sherwood Forest Homeowners Association to formally identify the community for planning purposes.   FOR SALE  |  NEW HOMES

The area is bounded by Nordhoff Street to the north, Balboa Boulevard to the east, Southern Pacific railroad to the south and Lindley Avenue to the west. It includes around 1,200 properties and more than 4,800 residents.

While there is no Robin Hood in Sherwood Forest, the area has a lot of trees and it’s almost like living in a mountain community. The community of Sherwood Forest has existed, informally, for decades. In fact, the area was one of the original named tracts in the city, and the official recognition. The homeowner’s association is one of the most active in the area, and there are several homes for sale.

Sherwood Forest will remain part of the Northridge South Neighborhood Council.

The area is conveniently located close to CSUN, Northridge Fashion Center, Dearborn Park and MetroLink station.

Home to most of LA’s major movie studios – including Warner Bros, Disney and Universal – ‘the Valley’ is an exercise in sprawl. Car culture was also basically invented in the Valley, which claims to have given birth to the mini-mall, the drive-in movie theater, the drive-in bank and the drive-in restaurant.

Attractions are few and scattered about; Burbank has the studios, and North Hollywood, west of here, is home to a growing arts scene. Studio City, west of Universal, has some superb sushi on Ventura Blvd. At last count there were 21 sushi bars within a six-block radius, which is why some call it LA’s Sushi Row.  Studio City’s grooviest shopping and cafe strip can be found on leafy Tujunga Blvd.

Note that temperatures here are usually 20°F (11°C) higher – and pollution levels worse – than in areas further south. But it’s not all bad. In fact, with lower-cost housing and the lack of congestion, the Valley is more laidback and down to earth than elsewhere in the city.

Burbank consists of two distinct areas: a downtown, in the foothills of the Verdugo Mountains, and flatlands, at the east end of the San Fernando Valley.

The neighborhood within Burbank set at the foothills of the Verdugo Mountains has a more upscale feeling than the communities to the West of the 5. The yards tend to be spacious, remodeled and many have been added onto. You will also find newer homes which were built after tearing down the original home. West of the 5 is flatter, and feels more middle income. A great community for bike riding, pushing strollers and walking. There is a 2 mile running/biking path along Chandler Blvd. In the Southwest corner of Burbank is the Equestrian community which is well-treed and has many charming homes.

Entertainment has generally replaced the defense industry as the primary employer, who are attracted by the relative safety and security offered by its own police and fire departments, highly rated schools and hospital. Other reasons cited are its small town feel while located only 10 minutes away by car to the hip clubs and restaurants of Hollywood.

The revitalized downtown Burbank provides an urban mix of shopping, dining, and entertainment. The San Fernando Strip is an exclusive mall designed to be a modern urban village, with apartments above the mall. An upscale shopping district is located in the state-of-the-art Empire Center neighborhood. The Burbank Town Center is a retail complex adjacent to the downtown core that was built in two phases between 1991 and 1992.

Highland Park is building a reputation as a mecca for artists, with trendy shops, galleries, bars and restaurants opening throughout the neighborhood. The continuation of several long-time businesses lend credibility to the neighborhood’s hipster status and add to its charm.

The trendy clothing chain Forever 21 was founded in Highland Park in 1984. The first store continues to operate in its original location bears the original name of the company, Fashion 21.

New hipster clubs have joined the local dive bars, with all become trendy gathering places.  The Old LA Certified Farmers Market opened in 2006, operating adjacent to the Highland Park Gold Line Station and providing a new nexus of community activity. Highland Park has a legacy of local businesses, some that have been a staple in the Highland Park community for over 20 years. The first of such businesses is Galco’s Soda Pop Stop. Galco’s has been family owned and operated for more than 100 years.  

In addition, another cultural landmark in Highland Park is Avenue 50 Studio.  Avenue 50 Studio is a nonprofit community-based organization grounded in Latino and Chicano culture.
