The Movie Colony (Palm Springs) Home on East Via ColusaThe Movie Colony is a neighborhood in Palm Springs, CA, just east of Palm Canyon Drive. This area started to become popular in the 1930’s as Hollywood’s movie stars sought places where they could have more peace and quiet away from crowded Los Angeles. Although the original houses were smaller than the estates in L.A. occupied by these celebrities, most have been rebuilt and there are many sprawling mansions hidden behind high walls and landscaping. Some of the early stars and Hollywood moguls to build in this area were Frank Sinatra, Estée Lauder, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Cary Grant, Jack Benny, Harry Cohn, David O. Selznick, Dinah Shore, Marilyn Monroe, Al Jolson, and Liberace. At about 110 miles from Hollywood, Palm Springs was far enough to get away for a vacation, but close enough to drive back in just a few hours. Surrounding neighborhoods include El Mirador to the north, Ruth Hardy Park on the east, and Old Las Palmas to the West. The Palm Springs Convention Center is one block south, and the Palm Springs International Airport is only about a 10 minute drive. The borders of The Movie Colony are E. Tachevah Drive on the north, N. Avenida Caballeros on the east, E. Alejo Road on the south, and N. Indian Canyon Drive on the west. This tiny desert oasis has an area of just over 0.25 square miles!
With less than 200 homes, The Movie Colony is a small but affluent neighborhood, with many large property lots featuring pools, tennis courts, and guest houses. The community features a mix of California Ranch, Spanish, Mid-Century Modern, as well as newer homes, giving the feel of modern chic mixed with retro charm. There are 2 parks, the Desert Healthcare-Wellness Park, and the Ruth Hardy Park, and hiking trails are available just a few miles away at the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation. In the early days of the area, those who didn’t own a home could stay at the nearby luxury El Mirador Hotel, which was converted to a hospital during WWII and is now the Desert Regional Medical Center having never been converted back to a hotel. The Movie Colony is also walking distance to downtown Palm Springs where many restaurants and retail boutiques can be enjoyed year round! For the those who want a peek at the homes of all of those movie stars who started the community, celebrity bus tours are available to all of the city’s most starstruck neighborhoods – The Movie Colony, Las Palmas, and Racquet Club Estates.

SoCal Home Blog can help you find bank owned, company owned, and off-market listings, to get the best deals on homes – homes for sale and even those not listed. Unadvertised and unlisted homes can be found in most neighborhoods of Los Angeles, and can save thousands or tens of thousands of dollars off listing price. By providing this info, buyers feel in control and not pressured to buy a home. Most real estate agents will beg buyers to come to the office and then waste your time driving you house to house hoping they can choose one you will like.
The SoCal Home Blog gives advantages to buyers and sellers with information about homes, houses, condos and lofts, whether near a desert oasis like Palm Springs (called the movie colony by some), or the snowy peaks of the San Gabriel Mountains. We will help you find the top homes to buy or rental income properties with a positive cash flow- many of the most popular areas and neighborhoods in SoCal actually have negative cash flow for investors and owners. Our goal is to help buyers find the best investment house or condominium. For info on downtown L.A. lofts go to laloftblog.com
