Cypress is a city in northern Orange County, CA, home to about 50,000 residents. Adjacent communities are Los Alamitos and Hawaiian Gardens to the west, Cerritos, La Plama, and Buena Park on the north, Southwest Anaheim and Stanton are to the east, and the south is bordered by Rossmoor and Westminster. Cypress is about 18 miles south-southeast of Downtown Los Angeles and 9 miles west-northwest of Santa Ana, and occupies about 6.6 square miles of land.
Originally inhabited by a native American tribe, the area was taken over by Spain until 1821 when it became part of Mexico, and then was granted to the U.S. after the Mexican-American war. Nicknamed “Waterville” at one time due to the many artesian wells in the area, the city was incorporated in 1956 as “Dairy City” by the many dairy farmers until the land became too valuable to be used for agriculture and was gradually sold to developers during the 1960’s. The city was renamed to Cypress in 1957 because of the many cypress trees planted around the Cypress Elementary School which was built in 1895. Since 1981, the city celebrates it birth with a huge annual community festival held at Oak Knoll Park on the 4th Saturday of July. Real Mex Restaurants, Vans, Bandai America and Mitsubishi Motors North America are headquartered in Cypress. The Los Alamitos Race Course is located in Cypress, even though it bears the name of its neighboring city of Los Alamitos.
