Northridge is a neighborhood of Los Angeles north of Reseda and Lake Balboa and south of Porter Ranch and Granada Hills. Chatsworth lies to the west and North Hills is to the east. Other nearby cites include Winnetka, Van Nuys, and Panorama City. Northridge was originally named Zelzah, a biblical word for oasis, then renamed to North Los Angeles in 1929 to emphasize its proximity to the city. In 1915 the area officially became part of the City of Los Angeles, and in 1938 it was renamed to Northridge to avoid confusion with Los Angeles and North Hollywood. Many celebrities were drawn to Northridge to gain greater privacy and purchase larger properties zoned for equestrian use.
There are 11 public and 8 private schools in Northridge, and it is home to CSU (California State University) Northridge. Residents can use the Northridge Recreation Center which offers a gymnasium / auditorium, barbecue pits, a lighted baseball diamond, indoor basketball courts, lighted outdoor basketball courts, a children’s play area, a community room, picnic tables, a lighted soccer field, lighted tennis courts, and a heated pool. Two other small parks, Dearborn Park and Vanalden Park are also located in Northridge.
