It is named for the nearby Spanish Mission San Fernando Rey de España, which was built in 1784. With easy access to the Golden State Freeway (I-5) the San Diego Freeway (I-405), and the Ronald Reagan Freeway (SR-118), Mission Hills is bordered by Granada Hills to the west, Sylmar to the north, Pacoima to the east, and North Hills to the south. It is also adjacent to Arleta and Panorama city to the south.
