Gallery Row is a district in Downtown Los Angeles created by the City Council, after being approached by members of the Arts, Aesthetics, and Culture Committee, to promote the concentration of art galleries along Main Street and Spring Street and to create a thriving, pedestrian-friendly, culturally abundant, urban neighborhood. Gallery Row spans north–south along Main and Spring Streets from 2nd Street in the north to 9th Street in the south. Prior to this, there were only 3 galleries in the area, so the borders were laid out to include existing art venues and vacant areas that had the potential for expansion and use. Surrounding neighborhoods include the Financial District, Little Tokyo, Arts District, Downtown, The Old Bank District, and the Jewelry District.
The area features the Downtown Art Walk, every 2nd Thursday of the month, a self-guided tour of the art exhibition venues in Downtown Los Angeles, which includes commercial art galleries, public museums, and non-profit arts venues. By 2010, the number of participating galleries reached about 40. Businesses began sponsoring the Art Walk shuttle, which began service in June 2007 and the numbers of nighttime visitors grew substantially from only about 75 in September 2004 to more than 15,000 in 2010. As the resident population increased, so has the cultural vitality of the district. The Downtown Art Walk now attracts thousands of people, and has helped the Historic Core and Gallery Row to be recognized as one of the most significant renewal success stories in recent history.
Between 2003 and 2010 the area has also seen an explosion in residential conversion of formerly vacant or underused commercial buildings. Examples of these buildings in the area are the Bartlett Building, Union Lofts, Pacific Electric Lofts, and Santee Court.
