The Flower District of the City of Los Angeles is a neighborhood located just south of central downtown, and is part of the Fashion District. It is a roughly 6 block area consisting of 100’s of wholesale flower dealers who sell almost every commercially available cut flower. The flower market started in the early 1900’s as farmers in the Los Angeles area drove their horse-drawn wagons to the produce markets to sell their flowers. In 1905 the first dedicated flower market was established on Spring Street by a carnation grower from Santa Monica. In 1912, Japanese-American farmers organized another market on Wall Street known as the Southern California Flower Market. In 1921, European immigrants came together to sell their locally grown flowers to florists and nurseries and incorporated as the American Florists Exchange on Winston Street between 4th and 5th Streets. Eventually the markets relocated to larger warehouses in the 700 block of South Wall Street where they continue to operate today as the core of the district and have organized into the Los Angeles Flower District. While these markets are for wholesale purchase by businesses, there are also many retail stores open to the public.
While most of the district is retail and commercial space, there are several nearby renovated buildings offering lofts and condominiums- the Santee Village Lofts, The Maxfield Lofts, Textile Building Lofts, Garment Lofts. Surrounding areas include the Arts District, the Jewelry District, the Fashion District, The Financial District, and Little Tokyo.
