The LA Fashion District spans many blocks in the Central, South and Southeast portions of Downtown Los Angeles. It is bordered by the I-10 freeway to the south and considered to be part of the larger Downtown neighborhood. Within the Fashion District are the smaller areas of the Los Angeles Flower District and Santee Alley and open air bazaar and market.
The Los Angeles Fashion District, also known by its original name “Garment District “, was formed in the 1920’s and 1930’s as entrepreneurs opened manufacturing businesses for sportswear and women’s clothing and later grew to include wholesale and retail stores. The neighborhood contains many retail, office and industrial buildings and businesses relating to apparel and accessories, textiles, flowers, as well as lofts and condominiums. Every year in March and then again in October, the area sponsors the Los Angeles Fashion Week, drawing celebrities, designers, VIP’s and tourists from all over the country hoping to sneak a peak at the newest designs and fashions.
